Overview
The downstream vaporization cooling stack is an important part of the environmental protection of long-process converter steelmaking. Its focus is on recovering the gas and waste heat in the BOF furnace blowing process. Baowu Group’s new plant in Zhanjiang (Guangdong) has built the largest converter long-process system in China, and we are involved in this.
Baosteel Zhanjiang Steel is the flagship project of Baosteel Group’s second expansion, shouldering the significant responsibilities of layout, industry, and regional economic adjustments, particularly in Guangdong. It plays a crucial role in international competition and the future development of Baosteel. With its unprecedented scale and equipment investment, it holds immense strategic importance. In 2015, we assisted in establishing a cutting-edge 350t converter downstream vaporization cooling system for Baosteel Zhanjiang. Upon completion, this project will transform into a green steel enterprise with global-leading emissions control and resource utilization efficiency.
In 2019, we provided converter vaporization cooling flue equipment similar to phase I for the Baosteel Zhanjiang 4# converter, which is part of the second phase of the Baosteel Zhanjiang expansion project.

The Approach
This marks the first large-scale converter steelmaking system in China, where our customers rely on our process knowledge and expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering. We offer comprehensive support throughout the entire project lifecycle, from conceptualization and basic engineering to installation assistance and final commissioning. Following commissioning, we assisted in optimizing the operation of the converter’s vaporization cooling flue system and delivered fully functional equipment by 2020. Considering the energy consumption and longevity of the steelmaking system, it is crucial to assess the impact of commissioning on its overall performance. Xu Dongmin, our director of engineering involved in this project, explains: “Our focus is to maintain a balanced level of carbon monoxide and steam within the system for sustainable and efficient operations.”
Challenges
With the first phase of experience, there are no problems in manufacturing. However, when it comes to transportation and installation, placing such a huge steel structure in the completed plant is a challenge for us. Under the direction of the site construction unit and our field engineers, we successfully solved this problem and also provided valuable experience for our future installation of 300-ton equipment.
Results
Upon completion of the project, the total annual production capacity of the Zhanjiang Iron and Steel steelmaking plant will reach 12.5 million tons, making it the largest single steelmaking workshop in China and a significant step towards achieving the goal of “building the highest efficiency green and intelligent steelmaking plant”.
